Musica Angelica Performs Bach

Baroque Orchestra Musica Angelica presents parts 1, 2, 3 and 6 of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio on December 13th and 14th, featuring the Tölzer Knabenchor, tenor Markus Schafer and baritone Randall Scarlata. The Tölzer Knabenchor, a renowned German boys choir, was founded in 1956 and has performed around the world under such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Leonard Bernstein, and Herbert von Karajan. New Debut Orchestra Season Opens

The Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra launches its 54th season with a concert on November 23th. The program includes Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, Weber’s Concerto for Bassoon and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2. Leading the orchestra is newly-appointed Music Director Case Scaglione, a 26-year-old resident of Irvine and recipient of the 2009 James Conlon Conducting Prize. Read more…

Contemporary Piano Music At REDCAT

Keyboardist Vicki Ray, a leading interpreter of contemporary piano music, will be the featured artist at the annual concert presented by the Southern California Resource for Electro-Acoustic Music (SCREAM). Headlining the program is the world premiere of Rand Steiger’s awhirl, a composition selected via an international competition for works for piano and electronics. Also featured are compositions by Peter Ablinger, Eric Chasalow, Shaun Naidoo, Steven Ricks, Jacob ter Veldhuis, and Daniel Wohl. The concert takes place on December 10th at Disney Hall. Read more…

Messiah In Monrovia

The choir and orchestra from First Presbyterian Church of Monrovia will be performing selections from Handel’s Messiah and other popular Christmas favorites on Sunday, December 7th. Messiah was intended as a thought provoking work for Easter and Lent, but has become a Christmas tradition. The concert will be led by Music Director Dr. Peter Green and will feature soloists Johanna Kent, Jan Freemyer, Linda Sharpe, and Nicholas Preston, as well as organist Dr. Anita Hanwalt. Read more…

Portraits At The Brand Library

The Brand Library Art Galleries presents Portrait in Phase, featuring the work of local artists Deb Diehl, Jane Gotts, Phung Huynh, and Alexandra Wiesenfeld, on view from November 8th through December 19th. The exhibition features works that explore the notion of time as it relates to portraiture. Through painting, photography, and video the viewer is encouraged to consider characteristics of time, such as its continuum, its passage, and the significance of its moments, as well as the role time plays in the creation of portraits. MOCA Presents Artists’ Books

Beginning October 19th, MOCA will present To Illustrate and Multiply: An Open Book, the first large-scale museum survey of artists’ books in Los Angeles since 1978. The exhibition will highlight a diverse range of conceptual strategies and formal processes, exploring how the ordering of visual, textual, and material information into book form affects meaning. Barry Schrader Releases New CD

The world premiere recording of local composer Barry Schrader’s electronic music epic Monkey King is now available. Monkey King is based on scenes from the classic Chinese book Journey to the West, written around 1550 by Wu Cheng-en. Considered one of the great classics of Chinese literature, the book chronicles the adventures of the Monkey King, one of the most fascinating fictional characters ever created. Read more…

A Noise Within Presents The Rainmaker

A Noise Within presents the second production of its 2008-09 season, N. Richard Nash’s romantic comedy The Rainmaker, running October 11th through December 6th. Previews begin Saturday, October 4th. The Rainmaker was a Broadway hit when it premiered in 1954, and the movie version two years later starred Burt Lancaster and Katharine Hepburn. Read more…

Face Of The World Festival

Starting September 12th, The Face of The World Festival 08 opens the New Los Angeles Theatre Center’s 2008-2009 season. All events during the three month performance-fest take place in one of four theatres located in downtown Los Angeles.
